CEE 5126 - Environmental Engineering Design II
Design of water treatment facilities for the production of potable waters from surface and groundwater systems. Objectives:
  • Evaluate raw water quality data in relation to appropriate drinking water regulations and identify which specific constituents require treatment considerations.
  • Based upon water quality criteria, develop conceptual schematics that include the necessary physical/chemical processes required to treat a specific water for potable use purposes.
  • Complete basic calculations related to head loss and backwash expansion in mono- and mixed-media filtration beds.
  • Calculate power input and mixing requirements in rapid mix and flocculation basins.
  • Calculate chemical dosages for lime-soda ash softening systems.
  • Apply ion exchange technology for removal of selected inorganic contaminants; further, size ion exchange columns as appropriate for treatment objectives.
  • Calculate residuals production quantities within water treatment facilities.
  • Identify candidate chemical coagulants (inorganic or organic) that would be appropriate for addressing water treatment needs; further, properly locate their point of application within the water treatment plant.
  • Identify appropriate chemical oxidants for use in addressing disinfection and other chemical oxidation needs for potable water production; further, properly locate their point of application within the water treatment plant.
